  • Graphene boosts the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis systems

    Updated: 2012-07-18 09:07:45
Home Introduction Graphene boosts the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis systems Tweet Energy generation Graphene applications Technical Research An artificial photosynthesis system converts sunlight into chemical energy as opposed to a PV solar system which produces electricity Such a system could be used to produce renewable fuels but developing an efficient system is very challenging . Now researchers form the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology and the Ewha Womans University in Seoul have discovered that a graphene-based photocatalsys could improve the efficiency of such a . system The researchers coupled graphene to a porphyrin enzyme . The resulting material converts sunlight and carbon dioxide into formic acid . This material is highly functional in the visible

  • Engineering Magnetic Algae

    Updated: 2012-07-18 07:26:19
Last year researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) took a gene that is known to form magnetic nanoparticles in magnetotactic bacteria and expressed it in green algae, where a permanent magnet can be used to separate the transformed algae from a solution. That tasks facing algae production for fuels are: keeping algal production over [...]

  • Artificial photosynthesis system gets efficiency boost from graphene

    Updated: 2012-07-17 15:00:01
(Phys.org) -- By converting sunlight into chemical energy, artificial photosynthesis systems could potentially produce renewable, nonpolluting fuels and chemicals for a wide variety of uses. But developing an efficient solar-to-fuel conversion process has turned out to be extremely challenging. Although researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of artificial photosynthesis, achieving a high efficiency has proven to be more difficult.

  • Hybrid Graphene-Silicon chip enables ultra low power optical information processing

    Updated: 2012-07-16 08:35:44
Home Introduction Hybrid Graphene-Silicon chip enables ultra low power optical information processing Tweet Graphene applications Photonics Technical Research Researchers from Columbia and Singapore discovered that graphene has a remarkable optical nonlinear behavior which could lead to ultra low power photonic integrated circuits . The researchers managed to use a single sheet of graphene and silicon to generate microwave photonic signals and perform parametric wavelength conversion at telecommunication . wavelengths The researchers say that by optically driving the electronic and thermal response in the hybrid silicon-graphene chip they could generate a RF carrier on top of the transmitted laser beam and control its modulation with the laser intensity and color . The resonant quality of

  • Hydrogen fuel cells provide power when fuel supply is off

    Updated: 2012-07-11 15:20:01
(Phys.org) -- Fuel cells, which generate electricity from the chemical energy of a fuel such as hydrogen, are not intrinsically capable of storing energy. When a fuel cell’s hydrogen supply runs out or is temporarily interrupted, the cell’s power output quickly decreases to zero. If an application requires energy storage, then the fuel cell must be coupled to an external charge storage device, such as a battery, which increases the weight and volume of the system. But now researchers have designed a hydrogen fuel cell with a new anode that can supply electricity up to 14 times longer than conventional fuel cells, which could be particularly useful for mobile energy applications.

  • Graphene can automatically heal holes in itself

    Updated: 2012-07-11 06:47:40
Home Introduction Graphene can automatically heal holes in itself Tweet Technical Research Konstantin Novoselov from the University of Manchester discovered that if you make a hold in a graphene sheet it automatically heals itself back together . This was discovered when the researchers used an electron beam to etched tiny holes in graphene , adding a few palladium or nickel atoms to catalyze the dissociation of carbon bonds and bind to the edges of the holes making them . stable When they tried adding carbon atoms , they found that these displaced the metal atoms and closed the holes together . The structure of the repaired area depends on carbon structure : hydrocarbon for example contains non-hexagonal defects while pure carbon results in perfect graphene . repairs source : Technology
