  • Grog in clay for throwing

    Updated: 2014-01-31 11:11:25
I usually throw cone 5 stoneware without grog. I have recently moved from Southern Africa back to USA and by mistake got some clay with fine grog. I am at a loss how to smooth it, as a damp sponge just brings up the grog. B.T.W. Is grog needed in clay for throwing? The only way I could solve the problem was to make a sieved slip from the clay body, or burnish. How to others deal with this? Is there a rule of thumb about when grog is needed? I've read it's a must for tiles, but what else? I 'm sure my question is very basic and dumb, but I learned to throw in sort of a vacuum being in Africa and all......... Thanks! Val

  • First time making a slip mold

    Updated: 2014-01-31 06:30:38
So, I haven't done this just yet, but I'm preparing to within the next few days. I have a few pieces waiting to be fired at a paint-your-own pottery shop, but the person I've talked to told me that creating a slip mold from fired goods would not be possible. Is this true, or does it depend on the nature of it? For example, one is vase-like, and I had planned on laying the bottom half in clay, casting the top, and repeating the process for the bottom half, so it would be a two. Does it have to be greenware for this (she also said after casting, the piece within would be destroyed), or can it be ran through the kiln and cast afterwards? If so, does it need a release compound?

  • Considering Getting My Own Kiln

    Updated: 2014-01-30 13:01:37
I'm considering getting my own kiln, but I know next to nothing about how to operate one, where it needs to live while not in use...nothing!   belong to a city operated studio for a very nominal annual fee where we can have everything fired at no additional cost, so it might be difficult to justify the cost. I'd like to find a "Kilns for Dummys" type book to learn more....is there such a thing?
