    On August 1 following intense pressure from international rightsholders, Russia introduced its brand new anti-piracy law. The legislation is a little like the United States' DMCA but with provisions for sites to be blocked in the event of non-compliance.   • NSA Spying and Anti-Piracy Laws Boost Demand for VPNs

    A survey has revealed that NSA spying revelations and anti-piracy laws are the most-cited reasons among new VPN users when they sign up for an account. The findings are published by IVPN, who further note that after the PRISM revelations the company witnessed a 56% increase in sign-ups.     All around the world the copyright lobby is pushing for increased censorship of ‘pirate’ websites, The Pirate Bay in particular. Thus far this has resulted in court-ordered blockades in several countries including the UK and the Netherlands. The question that remains is whether these measures have any effect. Researchers from the University of Amsterdam suggest they don't, and in a new report they show that the court-ordered Pirate Bay block has had no impact on local piracy rates.
