In a little under two weeks Russia's controversial new anti-piracy law will come into force. Enabling the blocking of websites that do not adequately respond to copyright infringement complaints, the legislation is scaring huge Internet outfits such as Google and Wikipedia. The UK High Court has been handing out website blocking injunctions regularly in recent months but despite the supposed transparency of the legal system, obtaining copies of the injunctions has proved impossible. An anti-piracy group currently trying to obtain the identities of almost 3,000 people, including individuals located at universities around the United States, has an interesting explanation for its activities. Contra Piracy, who are trying to sue over the 50 Cent movie "All Things Fall Apart", are defending their "right to sue" deal by suggesting that BitTorrent needs to be cleaned up in order for legal distribution by the same means to thrive.

Currently on a speech tour in Brazil, Tobias Andersson, one of the original founders of The Pirate Bay, says the site should shut down to make room for something better. “The Pirate Bay in its current form must end.
