  • Origin of bacterial spores contaminating foods.

    Updated: 2011-02-28 01:04:18
Authors: Carlin F Bacterial spores (= endospores) are common contaminants in foods. Sources of contamination in the food chain may include soil, faeces, animal feeds and food ingredients and processing chain themselves. Sporulation may occur in very diverse environments. The environment of sporulation has a strong influence on spore properties relevant for food quality and safety. PMID: 21315971 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Food Microbiology)

Authors: Krishnaraj Rajalingam & F Gisou van der Goot The sixth edition of the biannual ‘At the Joint Edge of Cellular Microbiology & Cell Biology’ meeting took place in October 2010 in Krakow with the support of EMBO. The meeting highlighted that research at the interface between cell biology and microbiology continues to bloom, and that cell biologists still have a lot to learn from bugs, as do microbiologists from cell biology. • Pyrenochaeta romeroi: a causative agent of phaeohyphomycotic cyst.

    Updated: 2011-02-23 23:00:00
Authors: Khan Z, Ahmad S, Kapila K, Ramaswamy N, Alath P, Joseph L, Chandy R A subcutaneous phaeohyphomycotic cyst caused by Pyrenochaeta romeroi in a 47-year-old Indian female is described. The organism was isolated repeatedly from the aspirated material from the cyst. It was identified by colony and microscopic characteristics, and sequencing of internal transcribed spacer regions of rDNA. Although our patient recovered without antifungal therapy, the isolate appeared resistant to commonly used antifungal agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second report of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycotic cyst caused by P. romeroi.
