I am so happy to share another story from Kris with you. She is a maverick when it comes to cooking with her daughter. (Stop thinking about Alaska when I say that word!). Can you believe that Audrey, her 2 year old daughter, has her own night of the week to make dinner. Yes, you [...]
If you are looking for more spinach recipes, here is another great one. I just posted the recipe for Strawberry Spinach Salad, and wanted to share another great spinach recipe with you.
Here is a take on one of my favorite Indian side dishes, saag paneer. Saag means spinach and paneer is paneer cheese, it is [...]
Although I often make homemade pasta, I’d never made ravioli before. So I was thrilled that my friends Katrina and Lauren would join me on this adventure. I prepared the dough the day before and set out my pasta maker and ingredients for Mushroom Ravioli. But then, Katrina emailed to say her son was sick. A few minutes later, Lauren called and said she’d been up all night with her sick child. This is defnitely a hazard of playgroup cooking --eventually everyone has sick children. But what would I do now?
Here is a fabulous dipping sauce that you will make again and again. Chimichurri sauce is a great sauce, made with herbs, spices, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. The great thing is that you can make your Chimichurri sauce as spicy or as mild as you want. It all depends on how much garlic and vinegar [...]

If you are looking for healthy salad recipes, then you should add the strawberry spinach salad to your list! Strawberry spinach salad is great and healthy. It is made with raw spinach and raw strawberries. There is another ingredient that is good for you in the salad, almonds. You bring out a lot of almond [...]
This recipe is inspired completely by my wife, who told me about something similar she had in Turkey shortly after her return there. It’s nothing more than Squeezed lemon, a bit of mint and sugar with boiling water added but like so many simple dishes the final product is something that is somehow ethereal and infinitely sublime.
Perhaps it’s that…
Yowza! It’s such an honor to be selected as a finalist for the Scholastic Parent & Child Parent Blogger Awards in the Green category.
You know what would be an even bigger honor? If you would take a second to cast your vote for What’s Cooking…and tell your friends to do the same. You might even [...]
Every Friday night, my husband comes home from work to a sparkling, just-been-cleaned house and asks the same question: What’s for dinner?

I am always so happy to find new bloggers that I enjoy reading. And it makes me even happier when they are eager to share a story about their time in the kitchen with children. Many thanks to Tiffany McCauley from The Gracious Pantry for this week’s awesome article on eating “clean” with children. Good [...]
Before anyone starts anything, I know that you probably have your own ideas on what makes the perfect grilled cheese sandwich and I’m pretty sure that this one isn’t it. For me though, nobody will ever make a more perfect grilled cheese sandwich than the one I’m discussing here. Why? Because my son made it and you can’t top my…

Sometimes I think that a dish I make is going to be far too humble to find its way here, but then I do a double take and scramble for my camera gear. This is one of those cases. A simple fillet of fish nestled in greens with a bit of dressing. It’s so uncomplicated and unassuming that it nearly…
Last week my friend Suzanne and I went shopping for our gardens at one of our farmer’s markets for tomato plants, pepper plants, herbs, and a few random buys like homemade cranberry coconut peanut butter.
I’d like to give a warm welcome to the new visitors who found my blog through Diane Elbin’s awesome 30-Days to a Food Revolution blog event! It’s such an honor to be included with such an incredible group of moms, dietitians, chefs and teachers.
Diane hand picked 30 bloggers, one for each day of the month, [...]

For my family cornbread was a staple food. It was served with beans and potatoes, with fish, for holidays, at parties and often just as a snack. It was always served with a bowl of chili. There was no question that chili and cornbread were meant to go together. If anyone had suggested to me as a kid that you could…
Are you, like me, becoming increasingly concerned about the fact that many of our children eat very little “real” food? There is more and more processed and ready to eat out of the package food available today, so much that some kids, and more than we want to believe I think, have little contact with [...]
For this month’s Cookbook Club, Susanne decided to take us on a journey to Turkey by selecting Turquoise: A Chef’s Travels in Turkey by Greg and Lucy Malouf for our book of the month. Many thanks to Christie for this awesome and detailed post about what works when she cooks with her kids.
Michelle asked me to put together a little post about the kids in my kitchen after I commented on her some-time-ago entry regarding what young children can reasonably do in the kitchen. In tossing around the idea, I [...]
One of my friend Lynn’s favorite foods to make is stuffed bread and since I’d never made it before, she invited me to make it with her for her son’s birthday party.
Here’s the thing. The warmer the weather gets, the spicier I like my food. for me a big pot of chili is a summertime affair, not something I’m looking for in the winter. On the other hand, when the temperatures start to climb I also tend to crave lighter foods, not something that’s going to weigh me down.
Shrimp is…

The weather here in far Northern California is finally edging to warm and sunny, soon to be followed by blazing hot. Along with the rise in temperature comes a steady decrease in the desire for long cooked, slow braised or even warm foods.
To put it simply, we’re entering the salad, ice cream and smoothie months of the year around…
I recently came across a new blog that promotes the virtues of cooking with kids. I was even more thrilled to find out that the lovely ladies who write there are from the San Francisco Bay Area, like me! Luckily for me, they offered to share this fantastic post about their experience making dumplings with [...]
No matter what skill level you attain as a cook or what triumphs of culinary complication you manage to master over the course of a lifetime it’s a plain simple truth that sometimes simpler is better. I feel that the simplest of dishes with the fewest ingredients actually takes more skill to master than dishes with complex ingredient lists and…

I was completely frazzled, freaked out and stressed. I had too much going on.
What do you serve when you have two teenaged nephews over for the weekend in a house already populated by four men? When you know that the two people visiting are capable of consuming the gross food production of some small island nations all by themselves in a single sitting? Casserole came to mind, but since both of my nephews…
For the past 25 years, no mammals (except for bacon – which was a pregnant thing) have crossed these lips. It all started when I was a kid attending day camp at our local Humane Society and the educational director there brainwashed us. Seriously. She showed us videos of veal calves stuck in teensy holding [...]
If you can imagine an incredibly savory pierogi mixed with a wonderful, chewy Mediterranean flatbread, you’ve pretty much captured the flavor and texture of this Turkish staple, Patates Gozleme. The word gozleme actually comes from the Turkish word “Goz” or “Eye”, and refers to the “Little Eyes” or brown circles that form on the dough as it cooks, but the…

Who can resist the combination of chocolate and raspberries? This is an easy recipe to make and great for entertaining.
A perfect treat for any mom this Mother’s Day.

You may have heard of Berkeley’s famous “gourmet ghetto” around Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse, and you’ve surely heard the term applied to SF Mission’s 18th Street strip since the opening of Tartine Bakery, Delfina, Pizzeria Delfina and Bi-Rite Creamery. But have you heard of the gourmet ghetto on Fillmore?
With TacoBar finally opening up for dinner [...]
