  • Google's Schmidt Pledges Raspberry Pi Linux Computers to U.K. Schools

    Updated: 2012-05-24 14:40:03
As we've reported, the diminutive $25 Linux computer dubbed Raspberry Pi is attracting developers and tinkerers, and we've also noted that it could succeed where projects like One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) ran into roadblocks--in the educational market. In fact, the tiny devices (see the motherboard shown here) have already drawn interest from educational system and technology industry leaders. Now, in a very promising step for the Raspberry Pi movement, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has pledged to give U.K. schools Raspberry Pis and pledged to train 100 teachers in how to pass Linux skills onto students. "Rebooting computer science education is not straightforward," Schmidt said at an event in London, according to the BBC.

  • Blowing the Cloud Wide Open: Box.net to Begin Negotiable Enterprise Licenses

    Updated: 2012-05-24 13:02:44
The generally accepted definition of "cloud services" - even the one prescribed by the U.S. Government (PDF available here) - includes the existence of metered or measured service - usually a flat rate that scales along with the service consumed. Now one of the cloud's most prominent competitors is opening up its enterprise license program to negotiation, enabling big customers - perhaps including the government itself - to name their price and enter into long-term, fixed-price deals. Box.net's move, announced this morning, opens the door for potentially very large customers to enter into long-term arrangements that would otherwise be quite expensive.

    Updated: 2012-05-23 19:18:26
Recently, we covered syncing files to Amazon S3 using the S3 Tools. This time around, we're going to take a look at another handy tool for making backups, Duplicity. While Duplicity supports S3, it also supports a number of other services that S3 Tools do not. If the command line seems like a hassle, don't worry: the Deja-Dup front-end works really well for simple backups.

  • Shell script wrapper for duplicity and S3

    Updated: 2012-05-23 15:25:29
Like the articles; backup is always an unappreciated utility until it is desperately needed. In case any one is interested I wrote a shell script to wrap duplicity explicitly to make backing up and restoring from S3 easy to automate. It can be used with a single GPG key for systems where you may need to relinquish the key, or with separate keys for encryption and signing. I have been using this script in one form or another for the past couple of years with few problems. The file, examples and documentation are all on github at http://github.com/memes/s3backup - Matthew Emes

The implications are the same. :D - Ernesto Augusto Schettino Benitez

  • Jack? Why not real innovation?

    Updated: 2012-05-14 13:56:04
What I want out of Jack or something similar is to be able to direct sound to specific speaker sets. System notice sounds out to one set, audio output to another set, and movies to a third set. I never use surround sound, but I want to listen to music in the bedroom, movies in the living room, etc. Jack is incapable of that. Perhaps pulse-audio can, but it needs a good setup program. There are needs for other creation tools that are usually thousand of dollars, such as electronic cad, routing, and parts list programs. All of what is out there, expensive or cheap, are on Windows. Likewise, I have a cheap Windows Cad program (DeltaCad) that makes 2d drawings easily. It's too easy to use to spend a couple of months learning to use the Linux 2d Cad's. - John Bowling
