: Monday , July 25, 2011 Basement Studio Under Way You never realize just how much work something is until you get underway with it . Like most construction projects , they always take longer than you expect and cost more . It takes more energy and more stress than it looks like on . paper Hallway to room soon to be studio Our house has a basement with a room that was the kids playroom , then the kids lounge and then a dumping grounds for misfit toys and the like . We decided that I could take it over . nbsp I began cleaning it out and coming up with some solutions for flooring and workspace . Now , believe me , it's a small space , but organized well and ergonomically it will be . perfect The basement floor was concrete with that thin basement type gray carpeting glued on it . Rather than
We first came across Austin furniture designer Eric Billig’s work when we saw some of his creations in concrete. He’s kind of a master with the material, and has a unique aesthetic that really sets himself apart. Well, it turns out concrete isn’t the only thing he’s good at working — Continue reading…

I’m firing up the ole salt kiln in a few weeks! It will be the first time in 2 years since it’s been fired and I’m pretty excited to see some pots come out of it. I’m firing along with 5 friends so I won’t be making a lot of pots to fill it. The [...]
Check into AKAR right here to see a wonderful online show of dessert plates, which include my own stripe-y yummies! Each of the 22 artists invited from all over the country sent two sets of four plates, one set of two and two singles. Sets are a rarity for me (more design planning involved plus extras [...]
Oh, I wish I were on the beach in Honolulu right now. Guess I’ll have live vicariously thorough my pottery for the time being. I sent this Goat cup out to Kailua, Honolulu, Hawaii last week. It looks very happy there doesn’t it? A bit closer to home, this next image was sent in by [...]
: Thursday , July 14, 2011 Gettting into a Rythm I always find the summer a hard tine to get into any sort of rythm of work . Even though the kids are actually in camp all day vs . till 3:00 during the school year , I seem to be involved so much more in the daily goings on . Swim meets , Sailing , Pictures , broken watches and on and . on Tomorrow they are in Centerport for another Opti Regatta . Gear ready to load in the . am I ran a glaze firing with good results . Over the next month I will have to tinker with firing times and temps . I fired to cone 5 and I think that I may bump it up to cone 6 and see how my glazes look . IN the studio where we work , we eased back down to Cone 5 because so many glazes were just running . Personally I think that it's because a communal studio has lots
: Tuesday , July 12, 2011 Slab Platters It's over 90 degrees and just to hot to work outside . In the summer I set up a makeshift studio outside . It's really nice to throw in the open air and let things dry there . It's juts too damn hot . I retreated to my new in progress studio in some spare space in the basement . It's very nice and Handy Hubby has done a fantastic job cutting , nailing and making things just the way I want them . I now have the challenge of organizing everything from tools to glazes that will take some time as repeated use is always the best indicator of where things should really . go So in my small studio I spent the afternoon making some large and some small slab platters and trays . I love the wooden hump molds for some of my larger . shapes Posted by P.Bridges at
This pot started out as an experiment but turned out to be a pretty nice piece. You can see in the latter part of THIS VIDEO that I used wax resist to mask out the areas around the Animal portraits. I did this instead of scratching away all that slip like I normally do. It [...]
I fired a glaze load over the weekend so I thought I’d start off by showing this rectangular box. This is the first box I’ve really put some time into and I’m happy to see that these have some potential. 6 1/4 x 5 x 6 1/2″ It’s decorated all around on all 6 sides. [...]

: Saturday , July 9, 2011 Cost to Fire Kiln I ran a glaze firing and have calculated the costs on my new kiln . Always helpful to know what I am spending and . where To calculate my costs . My new Excel Select Fire 7 cubic . ft kiln is 11520 Watts or 11.52 kilowatts Multiply kw x hrs fired . I also then apply a based on that cone I fire to since I am not using the full power about 50 for a bisque and 65 for glaze . This is an estimate- Multiply that x cost of kw 21 Expensive electric on Long Island : Looks like this . BISQUE 11.52 x 5 5.76 5.76 x 7=40.32 40.32 x 21 8.47 GLAZE 11520 1000 11.52kw 11.52 x 65= 7.488 7.488 x 8.5 63.648 63.648 x 21 13.37 Brick Red and Black Rim Posted by P.Bridges at 11:02 AM 0 comments : Post a Comment Older Post Home Subscribe to : Post Comments Atom Go to
Here are a couple photos of my pottery in use. This first one was sent to me with the following statement: “I thought you might enjoy this surreptitious view of your mug making its quiet statement in an early morning meeting of a bunch of bureaucrats.” I had to censor out those ladies faces. For [...]
