I’m not normally I huge fan of Fred Thompson as a politician, but he is a bit witty. Here is his take on Christina Romer: Obama Econ Adviser: spend more stimulus money. Bet she repeatedly pushes the elevator button trying to make it come faster, too. I’ll admit, I got a chuckle. But then, since [...]

  • Joe Miller -- he doesn't seem to be crazy

    Updated: 2010-09-02 20:50:46
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Miller_(Alaska_politician) The media has portrayed Joe Miller as a rightwing, kooky adical, but if you look at his resume and listen to him speak, he appears to be a very capable person. The Republican establishment even worked against him in an attempt to defeat his bid in the primary. Why?

  • Obama’s Budget And The Deficit

    Updated: 2010-09-02 18:40:31
Everyone expected 2009 to be a budget-busting year for Obama. With the country mired in recession, tax revenues were plummeting just as his stimulus spending was spiking. We ended up with a bit $1.4T deficit for the year. But his 2010 budget promised a light at the end of the tunnel. His stimulus [...]

  • For a sound dollar and a stable, growing economy

    Updated: 2010-09-01 18:42:20
We need companies to produce and sell oods which are bought by people who have traded their labor or production of goods or money with which to buy the products of others. There's too much counterfeit money floating in our economy -- expanding the money supply is not the same as creating new wealth. Either through higher taxes or inflation, all the funny money will disappear. The younger generation, especially the ones with small children or thinking about having children, should be raising hell and calling for a sound dollar and a stable, growing economy -- otherwise, we'll just pass this mountain of debt onto them, and this is criminal -- it makes thieves out of all of us.

  • Thoughts On The Libertarian/Conservative “Alliance”

    Updated: 2010-09-01 15:27:14
Over at Liberty Pundits, Melissa Clouthier argues that libertarians and conservatives are natural allies: Libertarians want the government to bug out. Conservatives want the individual to empower himself. Libertarians believe in rational self-interest. Conservatives believe help and charity come from a giving heart–not from the government’s pointed gun. Their motivations might be different, but [...]

  • Clean out the Republican establishment

    Updated: 2010-09-01 14:48:18
The old guard Republicans need to go. McConnell is an obstacle to real change -- he has backed exactly the wrong candidates in primaries. There needs to be a house-cleaning unless the midterms are a wasted opportunity to ake big changes. Even if some of the newcomers are inexperienced nd a ittle raw, we need fresh blood in Washington DC. The Democrats need to clean house, too -- Reid, Boxer, Frank, Pelosi -- they all need to go. The profressional politicians have looted America long enough -- it's time to change Washigton DC. America needs this type of change, and then action from the new representatives to scale back government power -- if e want to turn the economy around, this would be a good start.

  • Uh, you might want to hold off on praising northern European statism

    Updated: 2010-09-01 04:06:03
http://mises.org/daily/4655 The American left's love affair with northern European welfare and statism has always been misguided, but they don't listen.

  • Comment Of The Day

    Updated: 2010-08-31 19:54:47
From regular reader Akston: Emotions are the engine which often drives our efforts. Rationality is the steering wheel. Having one without the other is always problematic. Agreed. And as we’ve seen, this tends to be the case with modern American democratic politics.

From Ezra Klein: “The revenue loss over the next 75 years just from extending the tax cuts for people making over $250,000 — the top 2 percent of Americans — would be about as large as the entire Social Security shortfall over this period,” write Kathy Ruffing and Paul N. Van de Water at the [...]

The Economist’s Babbage, on computing education: That, for me, sums up the seductive intellectual core of computers and computer programming: here is a magic black box. You can tell it to do whatever you want, within a certain set of rules, and it will do it; within the confines of the box you are more or [...]

  • The New Prison Ray of Death

    Updated: 2010-08-29 03:04:48
Some things you just cannot make up: A device designed to control unruly inmates by blasting them with a beam of intense energy that causes a burning sensation is drawing heat from civil rights groups who fear it could cause serious injury and is “tantamount to torture.” The mechanism, known as an “Assault Intervention Device,” is a [...]

  • Even Death Penalty Supporters Urge Ohio Gov. Strickland to Spare Kevin Keith

    Updated: 2010-08-27 06:23:37
Its one thing when anti-death penalty activists petition a governor to pardon or commute a sentence of an individual scheduled for execution but quite another when death penalty supporters agree. Kevin Keith is scheduled to be executed by the state of Ohio on September 15th for the 1994 murders of 2 adults and 1 child; [...]

  • Ron Paul Breaks With Son Over Mosque

    Updated: 2010-08-25 11:20:29
This is one of the Texas congressman’s best appearances since the heyday of his presidential run. I’ll admit my enthusiasm for him has waned mostly due to his son and a lot of the people who have associated themselves with Paul. Paul himself, however, is consistently a voice of reason over the irrationality and hatred [...]

It’s beginning to be really easy to hate Facebook. While Google has stuck to its libertarian principles of free exchange of information by not cooperating with Chinese censorship, Facebook has become more and more creepy: The people behind the “Just Say Now” marijuana legalization campaign (oft-Boinged Salon contributor Glenn Greenwald is one of many political thinkers [...]

A great comment from Obdicut, which I found in the jungle of my last post’s comment thread: Michael, I’m sorry posting this has led to the stalkers having one of their uber-bizarre meltdowns in the thread. It’s a well-reasoned piece. I too, as an atheist who is against extremist religion of all forms, including Islam, supported “Draw [...]

  • Jon Stewart Has Earned My Respect

I used to think that Jon Stewart was another garden variety left winger but lately, I’ve found him to be perhaps the most reasonable political commentator anywhere. • Copyright Absurdity

    Updated: 2010-08-21 22:07:11
This story isn’t really that significant, but it’s a case in point of copyright absurdity: Madonna is being sued for using the name “Material Girl,” a reference to her hit 80s song, in her juniors clothing line designed with her daughter Lourdes. Clothing maker LA Triumph says it’s been using the name to [...]
