  • Pluto’s Expanding Atmosphere Confounds Researchers

    Updated: 2011-04-21 21:38:48
Recent observations of Pluto reveal that the icy orb’s atmosphere has expanded dramatically since 2000, and for the first time researchers have detected carbon monoxide. The findings may be evidence of seasonal changes in climate linked to Pluto’s most recent close approach to the sun, but scientists still aren’t sure about how those variations unfold over the course of each 248-year orbit. The recent changes in the atmosphere, as well as their timing, are indeed unexpected. “Pluto is obviously a much more dynamic object than anyone had expected.”

  • Cosmic burst in distant galaxy puzzles NASA

    Updated: 2011-04-11 12:42:20
Calling it "one of the most puzzling cosmic blasts ever observed, NASA is studying a surprising cosmic burst at the center of distant galaxy that has burned for more than a week, longer than astronomers have ever seen before. Astronomers have never seen such a bright, variable, high-energy, long-lasting burst. Usually, gamma-ray bursts mark the destruction of a massive star, and flaring emission from these events never lasts more than a few hours.
