  • I’m partway back

    Updated: 2010-11-29 09:13:31
As previously noted, I cut back temporarily on blogging (and taking briefings) a couple of months ago as my parents got sicker, then suspended work altogether a month ago when they died. I am immensely grateful to be in a line of work where choices like that are possible. Once again, I thank you all [...]

  • Data that is derived, augmented, enhanced, adjusted, or cooked

    Updated: 2010-11-29 08:57:23
On this food-oriented weekend, I could easily go on long metaphorical flights about the distinction between “raw” and “cooked” data. I’ll spare you that part — reluctantly, given my fondness for fresh fruit, sushi, and steak tartare — but there’s no escaping the importance of derived/augmented/enhanced/cooked/adjusted data for analytic data processing. The five areas I [...]

  • Document-oriented DBMS without joins

    Updated: 2010-11-29 08:55:40
When I talked with MarkLogic’s Ken Chestnut about MarkLogic 4.2, I was surprised to learn that MarkLogic really, truly doesn’t do anything like a join. Unlike some other non-SQL DBMS, MarkLogic has no SQL interface, no ODBC or JDBC. Nothing, nada. (MarkLogic has a Java interface for Xquery, but not for anything like SQL.) Since MarkLogic [...]

  • MarkLogic and its document DBMS

    Updated: 2010-11-29 08:53:45
This post has been long in the writing for several reasons, the biggest being that I stopped working for almost a month due to family issues. Please forgive its particularly choppy writing style; having waited this long already, I now lack the patience to further clean it up. MarkLogic: Is an ACID-compliant, document-oriented, non-SQL, XML-based scale-out DBMS [...]

  • Database Skills and Titles

    Updated: 2010-11-19 05:16:53
Kenneth Downs: There are three common job titles in the database area, which are Database Administrator (DBA), Database Programmer, and Database Architect. These titles tend to be somewhat variable from shop-to-shop, but generally the “Architect” term indicates the highest level of skill combined with considerable management responsibilities. The “Programmer” term is somewhere below that, but [...]

An operation might be doing an inventory in a warehouse . One person can do the inventory , walking row by row adding up the inventory . A faster way would be to hire a team of people . Each person would take one or two rows and when everyone is finished , the results can be tallied . The final answer will be the same either way as long as everyone can count but the team approach is faster . It also uses more resources people An Oracle query , running in parallel , works a lot like that .
