How I Wrote My First iPhone Travel App
Updated: 2010-05-31 21:40:17
For someone born B.C. (before computers), writing a mobile travel application seemed a daunting task. However, all of us in the travel writing industry know that mobile apps are the next paradigm shift in our business, so I knew I had to learn the technology and try to get a foot in the door of that growing market.
I partnered with an established company, Sutro Media, to publish a travel guide app on my adopted hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida.
As they always say -- whoever “they” are -- “Write what you know.” Sutro already had a relationship with Apple, a template, and several published and successful travel guides, so it made more sense than veering off on my own into cyber and c-fone space.
Esha's first submission to GoNOMAD was about her hike to Gertrude's Nose in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York State with her husband, photographer Pinaki Chakraborty.
We loved the story and photos, and since then Esha and Pinaki have done stories about many of their trips along the East Coast from Assateague Island all the way to Magnificent Maine.
Do you love to travel? Do you wish you could have the best travel resources all in one place, right at your finger tips, to ask all your burning travel questions? If so, the perfect place for you is the seventh annual New York Times Travel Show presented by American Express at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, February 26-28, 2010.

Traveling is hard work. An infinite number of disasters potentially await you the minute you book your flight and oftentimes some sort of disaster actually does happen.
But despite the inevitable bumps along the road, or turbulence in the air, so many people chose to travel again and again. It is to those people that the hilarious Titanic Awards are dedicated.
The Titanic Awards is a new book filled with hundreds of quick stories, all “celebrating the worst of travel.” Not to be read in consecutive order, this fun little book would be the perfect literature to accompany you as you try to ignore the gypsies at the train station or while you are spending time in the bathroom after drinking Mexican tap water.

Spirituality seeps deep into the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania and it has been a pilgrimage site for many years. On a windy day, I spent hours just wandering around the hundreds of thousands of crosses, written messages and rosaries left by those making the pilgrimage.
During the time when Lithuania was known as the Lithuania Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR, the Hill of Crosses was bulldozed completely in 1961, 1973, and 1975. To further dampen the spirit of Lithuanian nationalism, waste and sewage were dumped all over the area.
Pope John Paul II visited September of 1993, declaring it was a place of "hope, peace, love and sacrifice," and since then thousands of visitors have come to wonder, as I did.
I’m not trying to make you jealous. It’s just that it wouldn’t be fair to keep all of these photos to myself. I get around (not like THAT), and even with all of my travels around the world, I found Kauai to be a dream. Everywhere I turned were views like the ones here.

This is definitely a “want” item not a “need” item. It’s the Vortex Blender from GSI Outdoors. It uses no electricity but, instead, is cranked by hand. The idea, I suspect, is that on that next car camping trip, you can prepare a protein smoothie or crush some ice for an end-of-day cocktail.

Many parts of China can get quite hot in the summertime. But, did you know that there are three cities that are notorious for their heat?

Seriously. Two “dangerous” destinations on many travelers’ radars right now are Bangkok and Mexico (yeah, the whole country if you ask most people). Really, though, just how much consideration [...]
