  • Enumerable: Do Any or All Objects Match?

    Updated: 2010-07-24 07:00:40
Another useful thing to do with collections is see if any or all of the elements match a certain criteria. Updated: 2010-07-22 07:00:11
The Enumerable mixin provides a collection interface to all manner of collections in Ruby. A collection is just what it sounds like, any object that holds a collection of other objects. Common collections in Ruby are the Array and Hash, but anything that holds objects and implements the each method to iterate over them can use the Enumerable mixin. Of the most commonly used methods in Enumerable are the ones that allow you to select, copy, remove or sort elements based on a simple criteria....Read Full Post

  • Bindings

    Updated: 2010-07-14 01:00:27
You can use eval to run code from a string, but things are not as simple as they seem. The eval method executes code, but where in the program is that code executed? The context in which code is executed is called a binding. Code is bound to a context of instance variable, local variables, and global variables. If you were to reference the variable x, it's up to the binding to decide which variable named x you're referring to....Read Full Post

  • Ruby 1.9.2 RC1 Has Been Released

    Updated: 2010-07-07 21:28:16
This week is just full of Ruby releases.  First, the 1.9.1 patch release (which isn't very exciting, truth be told), but now Ruby 1.9.2 RC1 has been released.  This is a lot more interesting.  The Release Candidate releases are the last steps before the actual point releases.  Ruby 1.9.2 is due in August, but it was delayed once before and it's possible it will be delayed again.  More information can be had in the official release announcement.
