  • Using RVM Gemsets

    Updated: 2010-06-29 21:28:27
One of the most powerful, useful and often overlooked features of RVM is the gemset. A gemset is a separate gem directory, so the gems in one gemset don't conflict with the gems in another gemset. A common usage would be to install Rails 2 in one gemset, and Rails 3 in another. Since they're in different gemsets, there's no possibility of them interfering with each other....Read Full Post

  • Metaprogramming in Radiant to solve a simple problem

    Updated: 2010-06-29 21:01:29
I wrote about some simple metaprogramming in Radiant to solve an annoying problem of not being able to use custom tags in different contexts. Radiant includes custom tags in the Page model, and a popular option for managing stylesheets and javascripts prevents you from using these same custom tags in them. A few simple lines changes that.

  • Gregg Pollack on Screencasting and Podcasting for Developers (in 10 minutes)

    Updated: 2010-06-25 22:23:52
I've been itching to do some audio or video interviews on Ruby Inside - here's the first! Gregg Pollack of EnvyLabs and Ruby5 (previously of RailsEnvy fame) is doing a screencasting and podcasting workshop at BizConf so I thought I'd ask him what that entails and how developers can benefit from learning about these media. (I like things short and simple so the interview is just 10 minutes long.) Link to YouTube in case the video embed doesn't work for you. Products mentioned by Gregg include Screenr, Jing, ScreenFlow, and Camtasia for Mac. Gregg is also keen for you to get in touch with him if you have anything to promote on the Ruby5 podcast. Disclaimer: BizConf is a Ruby Inside sponsor, but while this is not a sponsored post, it seemed a good opportunity to talk with them! Hopefully I'll be doing something with Obie Fernandez soon too.

  • The Road to Passenger 3

    Updated: 2010-06-18 23:50:39
In January 2008, I lamented that the lack of a true mod_ruby was damaging Ruby's viability on the Web (which led to 100+ posts in the comments section!) but within a couple of months Phusion released Passenger (then known as mod_rails) and Ruby webapp deployment hasn't been the same since. Now, Phusion have built up a successful little consulting business (with some seriously big name clients) and are hard at work on Passenger 3. "Ease of use, stability, and robustness" are the keywords, and while performance is still being improved, Phusion seem keen to make Passenger the highest quality solution rather than merely the faster. Last week Phusion started a series of blog posts giving a sneak peek at the ongoing work and today's article on Passenger 3's increased stability, robustness and self healing features should be of particular interest to sysadmins and Ruby developers alike. A significant announcement in today's post is that Passenger will support zero-downtime, lossless restarts for both the Web server and your applications. While this feature isn't groundbreaking in the overall field, if Phusion can deliver such a feature, they'll be raising the bar for the majority of Ruby webapp developers and sysadmins overnight. Disclaimer: I am a beta tester of Passenger 3 (though admittedly not as useful a tester as I should probably be ;-))

  • multi_json, For Juggling JSON

    Updated: 2010-06-14 20:25:49
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a markup language for transporting objects, groups of objects or collections of arbitrary form and depth as plain text.  It's much more compact and easy to write by hand than XML, and is quickly becoming the de facto standard for this type of transport.  In Ruby, there are several options for parsing and forming JSON markup, each doing the same job in different ways.  Some developers prefer one library, some prefer another.  But they all perform the same task, so why not have an API that can work with any of them?...Read Full Post

  • Mongrel2 Has Begun

    Updated: 2010-06-12 23:13:53
For the past few years, the web server of choice for developers (but not necessarily for deployment) has been Mongrel.  Mongrel was small, fast and didn't need much configuration, and it was blazing fast compared to the pure-Ruby Webrick server.  What started out as a small project for a mixed C and Ruby server turned into a staple in the Ruby community.  But software must change and grow, and Mongrel2 brings the project forward.  Mongrel2 will keep the HTTP parser from Mongrel, but everything else will be new....Read Full Post

    Updated: 2010-06-10 07:58:41
They're here.  Since the advent of Rails, screencasts have been the way most of us learn about Rails on a high level.  These short videos outline the features of Rails, show how to perform some specific task or even walk you through an entire project.  The first way many people learned about Rails was the now infamous "15 Minute Blog" screencast, where an entire blog was crafted in just 15 minutes with plenty of time for talking and explaining....Read Full Post

  • Generating Padrino Projects

    Updated: 2010-06-08 21:22:52
Generating a project in Padrino is not quite as simple as rails new_project. Since Padrino strives for <emagnosticism, you should provide it with a list of systems to use. For example, you want Haml for HTML generation and Sass for CSS generation. I say should because if you don't provide these parameters to the generator command, Padrino will select some defaults. However, those defaults are probably not what you want....Read Full Post
