• wacky idea i had about black holes and dark energy

    Updated: 2010-07-31 02:26:36
o i was thinking about how scientists say that the expansion of the universe is accelerating over time. and i thought about what else has been happening over time: black holes sucking up matter. there was another thread recently that asked if our universe came from a black hole in another universe. what if black holes lead to another dimension instead (one of the 11 we supposedly have). theory says that a black hole crushes matter to a singularity, right? what if all that matter is being crushed into another dimension? and the effect of this is dark energy. the more matter that gets sent to this other dimension, the stronger effect it has. hence, expanding acceleration. any takers?

Socks Optional Brought to you by PhysicsCentral.com Friday , July 30, 2010 The physics of futility Open mic : Should science theorize about the unverifiable The cover of Shel Silverstein’s famous Book of Futilities depicts two men in an obviously hopeless predicament . Thoroughly chained to both the floor and ceiling in an inescapable room , one prisoner exclaims to the other now , here’s my plan . 8221 I was reminded of the old cartoon the other week when the front page of the New York Times science section had an article albeit very well written and worth reading on a physicist who claimed gravity didn’t exist . Of course he had zero experimental evidence and few in his field even understood his theory , but it got me thinking : Has physics

  • Lighting up the dark universe

    Updated: 2010-07-28 19:43:27
Exploring our dark universe is usually the domain of extreme physics. Clues to dark matter and energy are searched for by huge neutrino telescopes and particle detectors, deep underground, and by experiments launched into space. But an experiment doesn't have to be exotic to explore the unexplained. At the International Conference on High Energy Physics, which ends today in Paris, scientists from the GammeV-CHASE experiment unveiled the first results from their experiment, which used 30 hours' worth of data from a 10-meter-long experiment to place the world's best limits on particles of dark energy.

Scientists of the CDF and DZero collider experiments at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermilab revealed their latest Higgs search results today (July 26) at the International Conference on High Energy Physics, held in Paris from July 22-28. Their results rule out a significant fraction of the allowed mass range established by earlier experiments.

: : DiY quantum gravity An independent viewpoint about quantum . gravity Wednesday , June 16, 2010 Quick note : Two proposals in breaking of the equivalence principle Until Friday it is very unlikely that I have time to properly read the two articles that I am going to link here . But I find that they are challenging enough to leve a note abut . them The first article was cited yesterday in the arxiv blog : New Quantum Theory Separates Gravitational and Inertial Mass if you are Spanish and prefer reading it in that language there is a translated version by kanijo : Nueva teoría cuántica separa las masas gravitatoria e inercial Those entries make reference to the following arxiv paper : Inertial And Gravitational Mass In Quantum Mechanics I haven't read the actual paper , as I said I have

  • Predictions From David Gross

    Updated: 2010-06-14 23:47:28
Video of David Gross’s talk at the Physics at the LHC 2010 conference is now available. He devotes much of the talk to reviewing predictions he made back in 1993 of what would happen by 2008, and making new predictions for what will happen by 2020. The 1993 experimental predictions that didn’t work out could [...]

  • Energy in Space

    Updated: 2010-06-11 19:34:54
If indeed every region of space contains a non zero amount of energy then energy is being added to the universe as it expands, but since matter is being spread more thinly the actual energy per unit volume goes down. I wonder if the universe were ever to contract back to a singularity would the energy added by the expansion be destroyed in the process or go into the singularity? Along that line of though, I wonder if the universe contained nothing but a very large black hole, would the black hole be able suck up all the space in the universe outside itself?

  • In Arxiv today: Supersymmetry breaking

    Updated: 2010-06-07 08:48:00
: : DiY quantum gravity An independent viewpoint about quantum . gravity Monday , June 07, 2010 In Arxiv today : Supersymmetry breaking Today there are some interesting papers in arxiv , although not so many as the previous Monday . Some of them are purely mathematical , or concern formal aspects . I like formal aspects , and mathematics , but because I had some leaks on recent phenomenology I am provisionally interested in more mundane topics . One key aspect in phenomenology is supersymmetry breaking . To begin with the MSSM minimal supersymmetricla standard model only can get supersymmetry breaking by means of soft terms which are outside the model itself . These terms must arise by some method that generates . them The older studied method is gravity mediates supersymmetry breaking .
