As a confirmed mindless eater (who knows better than to go to buffets, salad bars, and all-you-can-eat restaurants), I applaud Brian Wansink’s new initiative…the Mindless Method. As one of their banners proclaims, “the best diet is the diet you don’t know you’re on.” In other words, to keep your weight down, it’s important to make [...]

Our family is anxiously awaiting the arrival of wireless 3G iPads at the end of April. I haven’t really had a chance to explore the possibilities of the technology yet, but one of the apps that is definitely on my list is the 3-D brain app from Genes to Cognition. If you already have an [...]
The paper reviewed here is ‘Theory of Mind Deficits in Patients with Acquired Brain Injury’ by Martin-Rodriguez and colleagues. As the title suggests, the researchers are looking at how adult acquired brain injury influences ‘Theory of Mind’ (ToM). ToM is an important component in various models of social cognition. For those not familiar with ToM, [...]

Here is a list of articles that i’ve included under the heading of social psychiatry. Broadly speaking they include reviews of policy documents, cultural psychiatry and epidemiology (strictly speaking it could be included under biological psychiatry but i’ve included them here because the data is considered at the population level). Where the titles are self-explanatory [...]

I consider myself a scientist, not a conspiracy theorist, and as compelling as the correlational data between the rise in HFCS and obesity appeared, the food industry continued to reassure everybody that HFCS was “just another sugar” and not responsible for the fattening of America.
So it was with considerable interest that I read that one [...]

In an upcoming article in the Journal of Consumer Research, Katherine Loveland and her colleagues show how loneliness and feelings of social exclusion lead to choices of nostalgic products over current favorites.
When I read this [...]
Toys are an important part of every child’s early development. However, choosing the right toy is essential.
Recently, I have been researching children’s educational toys and books that I plan to sell in a small retail shop, in addition to my psychology practice, so it’s little wonder this Scientific American article about toys grabbed my attention:

A study of healthy new mothers in the April 1 issue of the journal Sleep observed that the perception of poor sleep and the conscious awareness of its impact on daytime functioning might be stronger predictors of immediate postpartum mood disturbances than actual sleep quality and quantity. Results indicate that both objective and subjective nighttime sleep significantly worsened with decreased total sleep time and sleep efficiency after giving birth. However, variables correlation to the subjective perception of sleep and sleep-related daytime dysfunction were stronger predictors of postpartum mood. After giving birth, subjective total sleep time at night fell from 437 minutes to 348 minutes, and mean subjective sleep efficiency decreased from 79 percent to 66 percent. Seventeen participants (46 percent) experienced some deterioration of mood after delivery........
