  • Help. Where To Start? Clay-Firing

    Updated: 2014-02-27 17:29:04
Hi, Totally new here, and completely over whelmed. I got into throwing pottery back in high school, and have always wanted to do it again. I just bought me a wheel to begin throwing again, but Im at a loss from here. I have no idea what kind of clay to buy. I never knew there were so many options. My husband and I are wanting to build a propane kiln to fire out pieces in, so Im looking for suggestions on what kinds of clays are best to use for this kind of method. Also, anyone with info or experience in building a gas kiln? Any information I can get will help. Thanks so much!

    Updated: 2014-02-27 03:46:29
Hello, I recently was given an old Amaco electric potter's wheel no. 1-101. The wheel has not been used in a long time. The wheel head does not switch to the correct direction for throwing. There is also a knocking noise when the wheel is on. I have a basic diagram of the parts and wiring that came with the wheel, but can't figure out where to begin troubleshooting the problem. Any advice will be appreciated.

  • Flaky Terra Sig

    Updated: 2014-02-26 07:29:37
I've painted 5 coats of terra sig that's been lightly tinted with Spectrum stain onto a greenware porcelain pot. When I checked it this morning, the terra sig was flaking off. I've used this with other clays, and had no problem. I'm wondering if maybe I didn't let each coat dry thoroughly enough before adding the next coat, or could it be that the porcelain clay is too smooth? I'm new to porcelain, so don't know all it's quirks. Thanks for any suggestions.
