In the second part of his series looking at asynchronous processing in PHP applications, Padraic Brady lays the ground work for the third part and shows how to work with command line Zend Framework applications.
Part 2 is a tangential detour into how to make a Zend Framework based application accessible from the command line before we delve into examples using this in future parts of the series. If you are not a Zend Framework user, I'm sure you can find relevant material online for your own preferred framework though the ZF pieces may still have some usefulness in understanding the approach from an MVC perspective.
In his examples he skips over the basics of using a command line application and jumps right to things like argument handling, creating a custom router and making a custom "calling script" to handle the configuration of the CLI application.

The latest episode of the php|architect podcast has been released - an interview with Andrew Sampson, producer of stephenfy.com, the website of "actor/writer/polymath Stephen Fry".
This week's interview with Andrew Sampson is a perfect example of what we are trying to accomplish. Andrew produces stephenfry.com, actor/writer/polymath Stephen Fry's website. By his own admission (although we suspect he's just being modest), Andrew is not a technical person, but thanks to PHP and WordPress he and a small team run a website that handles tremendous amounts of traffic while working with someone like Stephen Fry, who travels constantly and therefore needs to be able to work in a distributed environment.
You can check out this new episode in one of two ways - either via the in-page player or in a direct download from the php|architect site.

On the SitePoint PHP blog today there's a new tutorial showing how to use the SimplePie aggregation library to create a "lifestream" website of all of your accounts across the web.
In this tutorial we'll build a page that gathers up the RSS feeds of all those little bits of your life and presents them all together in one spot. To do that, we'll use SimplePie, a feed parsing class written in PHP. It's powerful, it's open source, and it's easy to use. We'll then hack on the output a little, and make it all look gorgeous with HTML and CSS. The techniques we'll cover are also useful if you find that you need to aggregate RSS from many sources, like a news page.
In their example they pull together accounts from Twitter, Flickr and Last.fm. You can check out the code for their example script here.

The IBuildings techPortal has posted the latest episode in its podcast series of presentations from this year's Dutch PHP Conference. This time it's a talk from Matthew Weier O'Phinney on contributing to open source projects.
Working in isolation is easy. Most developers have long lists of tasks that never get shorter, and it's trivially easy to put on blinders as you slog through the list. Good developers realize that the only way to get through the list is to start using the work of others [...] In this session, we'll look at the various ways you can contribute to open source projects, and some common tools you can use to do so.
You can either listen via the in-page player or you can download the mp3 directly and check out this great session.

I’ve created a simple application as an example for beginners starting with zend framework 1.9. I used the zf command to create the project, so it is somewhat similar to the quickstart directory structure. Many current examples are following the old directory structure which will confuse a newbie. This is just a simple blog application, missing most of the features of a full blog system such as Wordpress. It’s just designed to show how the Zend_ACL, Zend_Auth, and Zend_Form components of Zend Framework are used.

Jeff Ello wrote in Computer World a few days ago, a story about managing geeks. Specifically about IT departments (though the facts ring true for development teams just as much). He blasts through the stereotypes, and gets to the core truths, showing everything not only what intricacies truly exist. But also, that he himself, is a geek.
