  • A Haitian dilemma: parents' rights vs. children's needs

    Updated: 2010-02-06 18:20:00
: . : MAIN CONTACT EDITOR SUBSCRIBE RSS Today is Sunday February 28, 2010 A Haitian dilemma : parents' rights vs . children's needs By Don Cayo 6 Feb 2010 COMMENTS(1 Globalization : for better or worse Filed under : Haiti earthquake disaster relief children and rights The question of what will happen to the 10 Americans caught trying to illegally smuggle 33 children out of earthquake-ravaged Haiti is a legal one with international . complications But the question of what's best for desperately poor Haitian children some with parents , and some without is a moral one , and a disaster like last month's earthquake has brought it to a . head As I have learned on visits to that country , the answers are not as cut-and-dried as if the same issues were raised in this country . I feel no uncertainty about the rights of parents and the desirability of keeping families together . But what if the parents want the child to go to foreigners or other Haitian families because prospects are so bleak at home And what if that parental decision is based on naive assumptions , on unrealistic hopes and or on outright deceit and misinformation My column examining these issues Heroes or villains In Haiti
