  • The Happy Planet Index

    Updated: 2009-08-11 21:47:00
The fact that economic growth can be conceived of in opposition to the health of the planet suggests that neither can claim to be regarded as the true overall measure of success in human society. A much more convincing case is made by the concept of well-being.

  • Green Shoots in the Banking Industry?

    Updated: 2009-07-30 06:15:20
At times like these, it’s wise to be cautious. But you also want to spot a trend before everybody else does. There can be profit in it. So I was intrigued when talking to Paul Hermelin, CEO of Capgemini, today, when he mentioned seeing signs of life in the US financial services industry. In the midst of the industry’s meltdown, many big firms halted all new software projects and concentrated on consolidating operations and cutting costs. But when he visited with a bunch of banking clients in the US 10 days ago, he saw signs of a thaw. For the first time in many months, he heard bankers talk about making new investments in information technology projects. Capgemini is now in discussions with several banks. Hermelin points out that he doesn’t have signed contracts, so it’s too early to predict a recovery, but he’s hopeful. “The financial sector, which was the first to die, may be the first to come out of it,” he told me.

  • A Breakthrough in Database Technology

    Updated: 2009-07-29 12:39:59
A technology breakthrough in database software announced today could shake up the software industry and make high-powered data analysis tools available to companies that haven’t been able to afford them. The technology, called the VectorWise project, is a collaboration between the American software company Ingres Corp.; CWI of Amsterdam, Netherlands, a government-supported research institute; and VectorWise, a spinout from the institute. The partners claim the technology produces database performance improvements ranging from 10-fold to 80-fold, compared to conventional database technology, depending on the tasks it’s performing. Ingres, an open-source software company based in Redwood City, Calif., hopes to have commercial products based on the VectorWise technology in the market by early next year. “This proves that the open source approach is not just about cost reduction. It’s also about innovation,” says Roger Burkhardt, the chief executive of Ingres. “A small company is leapfrogging the giants of the industry. How do we do it? It’s because of the open source innovation model.”
