  • Taking the Good with the Bad

    Updated: 2010-07-30 17:08:15
This week has not been one of the better ones I've had recently.  And those of you who follow me on twitter already know what I'm referring to.   I wound up in the hospital for a few days after I started having chest pain and shortness of breath late Saturday night.  Not knowing whether I was really having a heart attack or if it was just another severe reflux attack, I played it smart and went to get checked out.  I was there from shortly after 12:00 a.m.  Sunday morning until around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.   read more

  • Down With OCD

    Updated: 2010-07-28 21:31:45
"It’s classic OCD," the therapist said.   I wish I could blame diabetes for this, but I don’t think I can. While diabetes didn’t cause Charlie to have OCD, it did provide him with something to be obsessively compulsive about. The thought that his blood sugar could go dangerously low at any time provides the anxiety which triggers the compulsion to test his blood sugar all day long.   He’s showing other behaviors associated with OCD, but it's probably best that I keep those private.   read more

  • Dream Analysis

    Updated: 2010-07-24 05:31:03
Last night I had a crazy dream. Nothing new, right? Well, this one actually makes sense. Yes, I can interpret it! Yes, I often analyze my dreams. And yes I more or less “listen” to what those dreams tell me.   They said when you have a dream that involves you being naked it means you’re insecure about something. The first naked dream I remember having was right around the time my grandfather died. In the dream I was naked and put on my grandfather’s robe to cover myself up. It makes sense: I felt scared/insecure about my grandfather dying and found something of his to comfort me.   read more

  • I don't want your cookbook

    Updated: 2010-07-22 17:38:06
How many times a week or month do you receive a cookbook offer in the mail?  I swear at times it seems like there's one in my mailbox every other day. I really wish the distributors would stop sending me their envelopes full of enticing pictures of foods that I have no business eating. And I really, REALLY wish some of them would stop including a letter telling me how I can eat my way to a diabetes free life.  I'm tempted to mail those back along with a letter telling them how full of crap they are.  I haven't done that, yet, but I wouldn't put it past me.   Simply put: I Do Not Want Your Cookbook!   read more

    Updated: 2010-07-08 17:06:21
A common test to diagnose gestational diabetes - a temporary condition which can harm both mother and child if left untreated - also has predictive power for Type II adult-onset diabetes, a new Tel Aviv University study finds. Dr. Gabriel Chodick of Tel Aviv University's Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine has proven that women who "fail" the glucose challenge test, a series of four blood tests conducted over a single four-hour period, have a higher chance of developing adult onset diabetes during the later part of life. In his latest research, published in the journal Diabetic Medicine, Dr. Chodick observed that nearly half the women who fail all four of the four-part tests, demonstrating an elevated blood sugar level, developed Type II diabetes within ten years........
