Adding to yesterday’s varied quick comments: Robert Hodges of Continuent offers a great outline of Continuent’s clustering story, with a lot of “Now we got right what we previously didn’t know/admit we got wrong.” Continuent now claims to have a strong clustering offering, both paid and free/open-source, for both MySQL and PostgreSQL, with Oracle support perhaps [...]

  • Clearing up MapReduce confusion, yet again

    Updated: 2009-12-30 02:50:53

Let’s try one more time: MapReduce was named and popularized — but not invented — by Google. “MapReduce” variously refers to: A programming paradigm Execution engines that implement the programming paradigm Distributed file systems that work with the execution [...]

In a log shipping relationship , the primary server transfers copies of its transaction logs to the secondary server on a periodic basis . The secondary server receives those logs and uses them to update its copy of the database so that it is then in the same state as the database on the primary server . For example , if an erroneous modification corrupted your data at 2:36AM on Monday , you could use SQL Server's point-in-time restore to roll your database back to 2:35AM , wiping out the effects of the error . When you create a new NOT NULL constraint on a database column , SQL Server checks the column's current contents for any NULL values . If the column currently contains NULL values , the constraint creation fails . Otherwise , SQL Server adds the NOT NULL constraint and any future INSERT or UPDATE commands that would cause the existence of a NULL value fail . However , this benefit comes at a cost : the transaction log can consume a substantial amount of space in an active database . SQL Server provides two actions designed to counterbalance these large space requirements : transaction log truncation and log file shrinking . • The legit part of the NoSQL idea

    Updated: 2009-12-11 22:06:52
I’ve written some snarky things about the “NoSQL” concept – or at least the moniker. (Carl Olofson’s term “non-schematic databases” seems less bad.) Yet I’m actually favorable about the increasing use of SQL alternatives. Perhaps I should pull those thoughts together. Relational database management systems were invented to let you use one set of data in [...]
