• 2012 Tour de France is here; where to follow the bike race

    Updated: 2012-06-29 22:58:02
Pop the cork to celebrate and break off a chunk of baguette for extra carbs. The 99th edition of the Tour de France rolls out of Liege, Belgium, on Saturday for its three-week sufferfest that ends  in Paris on July 22. Most pundits are calling this a two-man bike race — Britain’s Bradley Wiggins (SKY) … Continue reading »

  • 1984 Bike Tour: Day 48 – Like being south of the border

    Updated: 2012-06-29 16:54:00
SANTA FE, N.M. - Most of the day, I felt that I was no longer cycling through the US, but had slipped south of the border. The Hispanic culture here, mixed with the Native American, is very strong. For instance, after Penasco, we followed a road that reminded me of cycling in the Alleghenies because it rose and fell like a rollercoaster. We passed through some towns, such as Las Trampas, that had a mission older than most of the Colonial era buildings back home in historic Annapolis. ...

  • States can opt out of bicycle-project spending in new federal Transportation funding bill

    Updated: 2012-06-28 18:43:04
The Supreme Court ruling on the health care law isn't the only big news coming out of the nation's capital this morning. The long-awaited House-Senate conference report on Transportation funding also was expected on Thursday. In fact, here are all 600 pages of MAP-21. Bicycle advocates have been making a full-court press on Congress to preserve funding for "Transportation enhancements" (such as funding for bicycle projects) in the bill. It appears they've only had partial success. ...

  • Day 47 – The route might be flat, but it ain’t Kansas

    Updated: 2012-06-28 17:00:26
TAOS, N.M. - We've covered almost 3,000 miles on our cross-country bike ride so far, and I don't remember any place as unique as this. I almost feel like I'm in a different country. Much of the area sits on a plateau, so its flat like Kansas. But it's arid, so there's only dry brush around. We were back on the road at 6:30 a.m. No ranger hassled us. We had a free night. We continued on the same road all the way to Antonito, about 15 miles away. We steadily dropped from the woodsy environment to a scrubby sagebrush plain. The small towns we passed, Mogote and Las Mesitas, had many adobe houses. ...

  • Day 46 – Back and forth over the “Divide”

    Updated: 2012-06-27 16:17:21
ASPEN GLADE, COLO. - This is rough terrain, and we crossed back over the Continental Divide and bicycled in and out of New Mexico today. We're still making progress to the Pacific, though it doesn't seem so. We said our goodbyes to Gunter and Elsa (they said they didn't want to hold us back, although I doubt this because they set a torrid pace), and pedaled south on Route 84 to Chromo. Nothing much going on here except a second breakfast. After leaving the mountains, we're in some high plains here. A landmark, Chromo Mountain, we watched approach for more than 10 miles. We passed it on our right, and continued over the New Mexico border...

  • Day 45 – This “health” beverage tastes better than Gatorade

    Updated: 2012-06-26 17:31:44
PAGOSA SPRINGS, COLO. -We hooked up with a German couple on the road today who taught us about a new health drink, although we have yet to try it while cycling. We packed up early at the hostel in Durango and took off. Anymore, I always feel better being back on the road, no matter how much I needed a rest day. Today we're following a new map behind the clear window in my handlebar bag. We're long-finished with the traditional Bikecentennial maps -- that route veered north somewhere after Pueblo. We're on the Great Parks South Bicycle Route Extension map. ...

  • Bicycle humor from the 1890s

    Updated: 2012-06-25 19:43:49
With the future of civilization hanging in the balance of our two skinny bicycle tires, it’s easy for us to take ourselves too seriously. I don’t know if that was the case in the 1890s, when the “modern” style bicycle first became popular. But cartoonists of that era found the bicycle was a good vehicle … Continue reading »

  • Day 44 – Using a pickup instead of bikes to Mesa Verde; bad move

    Updated: 2012-06-25 16:38:01
DURANGO, COLO. - Note to self: If you're touring by bicycle, stay on the bicycle. We've just returned from a strange and troubling adventure involving our reliance on a pickup truck we borrowed for the day. We're all safe and sound, but it could have turned out much worse. Bruce and I had planned to take today off and take a $25 guided tour to the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, about an hour's drive away. The hosteler said we could do it cheaper if we rented a car, and what's more, a German hostel guest, Christiane, could go with us and make it back by her 4:30 bus ride out of town. ...

  • The Big Hit & Run Killer

    Updated: 2012-06-18 10:51:00
: 18 June 2012 The Big Hit Run Killer As Sergeant Joe Friday puts : it How much difference , for example , as far as moral guilt is concerned , is there between the following : 1 the man who plans a killing , takes up a gun , finds his victim and shoots him to death . And 2 the man who thinks he has to look out for no one’s welfare but his own , gets behind the wheel of a car , disregards the ordinary rules of safety and proceeds to commit homicide with a motor vehicle . Often times the crime masquerades under the guise of an accident . Morally , no matter how you spell it , it adds up to murder just as surely as if the person had taken a gun and shot his victim . down First episode of Dragnet , March 18, : 1954 An old lady and her grandson are hit and killed in a crosswalk . • Car Industry Strikes Back - Sixt

: 13 June 2012 Car Industry Strikes Back Sixt Having just returned from working in Brazil and Norway this was a fun addition to my inbox . Nothing like a new addition to the Car Industry Strikes Back series here on Copenhagenize Thanks to Tim from urbanophil.net for this one . It's from the German global car rental company , Sixt They cut refreshingly to the chase with their text , making it easier for : us To all those pioneers , idealists , eco-heroes and saviors of the world : You don't have to ride bicycles anymore Yes , they just wrote that . : 12 June 2012 Let's Talk Numbers This post is by one of Copenhagenize's finest , Rachel . nbsp She's been involved in quite a few of our projects , including the next Copenhagenize Index for bicycle-friendly cities . By now we all know or have at least heard that cycling is beneficial for cities , and the benefits range from improving health to decreasing congestion . For those who aren’t on board yet , some of the findings we developed here at Copenhagenize should help change your . mind We can talk on and on about the various benefits that come with bikes , but when it comes to municipalities actually implementing policies and infrastructure , the conversation will inevitably turn to numbers . How do the real costs of driving a car compare with the costs of riding a bike We believe we
