The New York Times' Sheryl Gay Stolberg writes today (8/31/10) about the possible steps Obama might take to bolster the economy: With voters angry about government spending, and economists divided about just what approach is the correct one, such aggressive steps are by now out of the question. "There’s a deep frustration among economists that [...]

    Updated: 2010-08-31 20:17:50
In the coverage of Hurricane Katrina's fifth anniversary, you'll find several obligatory mentions in the corporate media of the still-decimated Lower Ninth Ward, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything as direct or damning as what you find in independent media coverage--for example, this piece on Women's eNews (8/29/10) by Kimberly Seals Allers, [...]

  • Is the filter truly dead?

    Updated: 2010-08-07 01:55:36
It hasn't been 24 hours since Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey let slip on JJJ's Hack program that the Coalition won't back the Labor Government's plan for mandatory ISP-level internet censorship. Whether they win or lose, they have stated categorically that they will vote against such a scheme. Does this mean the battle of the last three years has ended in victory? Can we all pack up and move on? Yes and no - but there's cause for plenty of optimism. It's clear that the mandatory internet censorship policy requires a new law to be introduced. That legislation, of course, has [...]

  • EFA welcomes Liberal stance on filter

    Updated: 2010-08-05 10:41:53
Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) today welcomed an announcement by Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey that the coalition will oppose any move to legislate mandatory internet censorship in Australia. On Thursday's Hack program on Triple J radio, Mr Hockey stated that "we believe the internet filter will not work and we believe it's flawed policy." "We applaud Mr Hockey's announcement that the Liberal Party will vote against Labor's filter," said EFA Chair Colin Jacobs. "The Opposition are very welcome among the ranks of those many organisations and individuals that see the filter as a policy failure." A mandatory censorship scheme remains Government [...]
