In this study, we investigate how the interplay between these two types of control depends on the modular structure of the parasite antigenic archive. Our model shows that the degree of synchronization in stochastic variant emergence determines the relative dominance of general over specific control within a single peak. A requirement for multiple‐peak dynamics is a critical switch rate between blocks of antigenic variants, which implies constraints on variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) archive genetic diversification. Our study illustrates the importance of quantifying the links between parasite genetics and within‐host dynamics and provides insights into the evolution of trypanosomes.
This article comprises exemplary studies presented at the Fourth International Conference in Africa for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry (Maasai Mara, Kenya, 2008). It includes a brief introduction into technical advances, discusses the developing cardiovascular system of various vertebrates, and demonstrates the flexibility and plasticity of early developmental stages. Fluid forces, oxygen availability, ionic homeostasis, and the chemical environment (including, e.g., hormone concentrations or cholesterol levels) all contribute to the shaping and performance of the cardiovascular system.
In conclusion, even though early weaning at 25 dpp seemed to improve body energy stores of primiparous does, this fact was not well reflected on the ovarian status at 32 dpp, which was similar regardless of weaning time and it could be performed later.

Conclusions:
Simple transient transfection of plasmid DNA encoding reprogramming factors is sufficient to generate human iPS cells from primary fibroblasts that are free of exogenous DNA integrations. This approach is highly accessible and could expand the use of iPS cells in the study of human disease and development. (Source: BMC Developmental Biology - Latest articles)

In this study, we stressed the comparative analysis of the stem-loop secondary structure in A+T-rich region of all Orthoptera species available to date, and report new findings which may facilitate further investigation and better understanding of this secondary structure. Finally, we undertook a phylogenetic study of all Orthoptera species available from GenBank to date based on three different datasets using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. Our result showed that protein-coding genes (PCG) and amino acid sequences (PCG_PROT) provided good resolution of higher-level relationships within the Orthoptera, whereas ribosomal RNA genes (RIBO) perform poorly under different optimality criteria.

The researchers at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Gera number of, who 'fathered' the Digital Embryo have now given it wings, creating the Fly Digital Embryo. In work published recently in Nature Methods, they were able to capture fruit fly development on film, and were the first to clearly record how a zebrafish's eyes and midbrain are formed.
